President’s Message
By Robert Holland
NAMBA President
As the 2015 race season starts to wind down for some, I would like to step back and
reflect if it was/is a success. The question then becomes…. what makes my season a
success? It comes down to three questions. 1. Did I win on the race course? 2. Did I
have fun? 3. Did I promote NAMBA and model boating in any way?
This year, not always in the past, I can answer yes to all three questions. I won a
little on the race course. Traveling to some races and winning a few trophies
accomplished this. Actually, I won a few NAMBA FE National Championships. Of
course some friends taking me under their wings and teaching me all I know about FE
aided in this. Won on the race course so that is a yes.
Fun… I probably had more fun this year racing then the last few years combined. I
stopped worrying about winning and took the time out to smell the roses, so to speak. I
actually scratched a few classes on purpose so I could sit and talk to people, pit more
and help fellow boaters. It made me realize I did not even miss racing those classes. At
the end of each race day, I had more enjoyment and laughs. One race I actually missed
an entire round as I walk over to get a prescription for a cold I was fighting. If you
know me I would rather die than miss a heat.
The awards banquet for the 2015 NAMBA FE Nationals had to be the funniest
awards banquet I have ever attended. Actual tears were rolling down my face from
laughing so hard. I think I strained a cheek muscle. So the fun factor was way up so
that is also a yes.
Did I promote model boating? This is normally a tougher question to answer. I
always say yes because I talked to somebody about our hobby. But I don’t think that
cuts it here. So to be sure I accomplished this task, I took a neighbor boy to a race with
us this summer. It was quite a success. He was overjoyed and overwhelmed to say the
least. I have never heard a kid ask so many questions. It got to be too many so we put
him on a question time out. He was allowed ten questions per hour. They were
normally used up within in fifteen minutes which was good because we got some
peace and quiet throughout the rest of the day. He is coming to our district race finals
the end of September. I may even have a boat for him to thrash with. Model boating
was promoted so another yes. It has been a successful year.
The down side to all of this is NAMBA has had too many accidents in the past two
years. Parties at each incident reviewed each case and the general consensus was that
