Rum Racing at the NAMBA Nats
By Lenny Blake
District 19 Model Boater
To The Victor Go The Spoils
The 2012 NAMBA Nationals in New Hampshire was
beautiful with green trees all around the race site. I enjoyed
meeting new people and sitting back and relaxing. I want to
thank Alan Hobbs and Doug Sick for taking care of the
traveling crew from District 19 which consisted of Al
Waters, Russ Stark, and myself, Rum Racing (Lenny
Blake). Alan had everything from tents, tables, chairs, a
cooler for us. You name it ... he had it!
Alan Hobbs, who was our host, made a statement to
everyone on the first day of racing, that if anyone won first
place in a class, he would break out and open his special
bottle under his tent that he received at last year’s Nationals
in California. Of course the focus was on who was going to
be the first to win a class. At the conclusion of the first day, I
had to remind him that I was a winner. So I asked him where
the bottle was.
Needless to say, throughout the rest of the week we all
(Doug Sick, Al Waters, Alan Hobbs and myself a triple
winner) got a crack at the bottle. When I won, the plastic cup
was rather small. But when Alan Hobbs won he broke out the
larger glasses and tipped the bottle a little more. Hey, he
deserved it. It was his bottle and he was sharing!
On that note I want to thank Alan and Doug for all their
help the whole week as it was greatly appreciated.
The Welcome Party
The Welcome Party at the hotel was very nice. The food
was excellent with a lot of home made dishes, meats, salads,
crackers, bread, cheese, fruit, etc. We didn’t even run out of
food. There was so much it was taken out to the race site the
next day and eaten after the races were completed. Thanks to
Butch and Marie Thibodeau for a wonderful spread.
The Lobsterfest and Clambake
We had not planned on attending the Lobsterfest and
Clambake when we arrived in New Hampshire but we
decided to once we got there on Saturday and heard that it
was the thing to do. And let me tell you what an experience it
was for me.
I have never worked so hard for my food. First I had to
get a lesson on how to disassemble a lobster and then there
was the lesson on what I should eat and not eat. Thank you,
Butch and Marie Thibodeau. I over indulged and ate two
lobster. The meal was delicious.
I want to thank Rags Grenier and his family, Butch and
Marie Thibodeau, and the entire District 11 for a wonderful,
enjoyable, relaxing and fun week of R/C boating racing.
After site seeing and having dinner with fellow boaters
and their family and friends, I had a great experience.
I also want to thank the Hall of Fame committee for my
induction in to the NAMBA Hall of Fame. I will continue to
promote NAMBA and model boating in general. I hope to
see you at the 2013 NAMBA Nationals in Salt Lake City,
Utah.
